Wood is a natural material that rewards a little care. These simple steps will help your board or tray keep looking good.
Everyday cleaning
- Wash by hand with warm water and a little mild washing-up liquid, then rinse.
- Dry straight away with a clean tea towel and leave it standing on its edge to air-dry fully.
- Do not soak it, leave it standing in water or put it in the dishwasher. Prolonged moisture and heat can cause wood to warp or crack.
Oiling
- Every few weeks, or whenever the wood looks dry or pale, rub in a thin coat of food-grade mineral oil or board oil with a soft cloth.
- Leave it to soak in, ideally overnight, then wipe off any excess.
Using your board
- Clean the board thoroughly after preparing raw meat or fish.
- Keep it away from direct heat such as hobs, ovens and radiators.
- Light cutting marks are normal on a chopping board and part of its character. Sanding lightly with fine sandpaper and re-oiling can refresh the surface; avoid sanding over the engraving.
Resin boards
We recommend using boards with a resin section for serving. Avoid cutting on the resin, placing hot pans on it or exposing it to strong direct sunlight for long periods.
Marble and acacia boards
Wipe the marble with a soft, damp cloth and dry it. Do not leave acidic foods such as lemon, vinegar or wine on the marble, as they can mark the surface. Care for the wooden section as above.
Cookbook stands
Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry. Keep away from steam and direct heat.
